jobless?

Another academic year begins.
Students are still not very keen on joining for a BSc in life science subjects as seen by the fact that very few have applied for seats in our college for a life science course.
The reason is that a large number of Pharmacy colleges have opened in the last two years in AP.
Students (their parents more likely) prefer to get a BPharm degree to getting a BSc degree. The perception is that job opportunities are much more likely for a person with a BPharm.
Secondly, what does one do with a BSc? Do an MSc? Ok then what?Ummm....well, maybe a PhD? how many years is that? well....maybe 9 or 10 for the whole process....WHAT?
I don't blame them really, but it may mean we are out of a job in the next couple of years .....

The arguments given in this post neatly sum up the fault that lies in our perspective. The pursuit of science needs to be seen as a journey rather than an end. Even on materialistic grounds, an academic career is evolving into a more rewarding one over the years.

There is a fundamental flaw with the aim of B>Sc programmes in our country.
The question I would like to ask is... what is a person equipped to do after B.Sc ? Do they have any option apart from going for another higher degree ?

If that is that case, then what the hell is the point of this degree. Might as well make students attend college for another year and give them some skills that they can use.

The BSc degree is useful to a limited extent. For a school teacher, a BSc BEd entitles him/her to teach science to middle school kids. Also you are now a graduate. For a person who wants a career in science, of course it's the starting point. But for people in the middle...who want something more than "I am a Graduate" but are not keen on a research career, it is of no use.
@Ranga: while I agree pursuit of science could be an end in itself, it's not everyone's "cup of tea". As Amitabh Bacchan says, gana gane ke saath, khana khane ki bhi zaroorat hai.

Ceiling fan

I read somewhere that as a solution for student suicides, IISc has decided to remove fans from hostel rooms. No fan, no suicide. This shoul...
