Intermediate examinations in AP

This year, the Intermediate II year result led to a lot of disappointment with many (31%) failing in Physics. The AP Board of Intermediate has advised students to study from the textbooks prescribed by them and not the material given by the 'corporate colleges'.
Students are upset because the questions asked in the exam are not from previous question papers that form the question bank. That is why many failed and even those who passed, did so with less marks than they expected.
The BIE says that the questions are from the prescribed textbook and NOT outside the syllabus. They have threatened that next year, other subjects will have similar questions.
There will be a re exam on the 16th May.
That is education in AP!

I have been following your blog for about a year or so and I have similar views regarding school education. Last week, I had gone to my village which is in the interiors of TN and quizzed a few students. Some as young as 1st std and others as old as 12th. What I can conclude from my interactions is that our simulations are way off in comparison with the experimental observations. Something somewhere is seriously wrong. The gal who just wrote the 12th board (she is from an underprivileged background) told me that her physics paper was very "tough". I asked in what way. She replied "there were many 8 mark questions, so for every 8 mark question, you need to at least fill 8 pages. Many could not accomplish the mission and so it was tough". That silenced me and I have slowly began to relinquish. I used to always get rankled to hear this, "to be born in this community, you should have done good deeds in your previous birth. For that you should be thankful to the almighty". But slowly I have begun to realize how lucky I am to be born to an affluent and educated family. Isn't it shear luck that my skin colour is fair. Isn't it shear luck that I am studying in a highly ranked skool/college. Isn't it luck that my brain is able to think and visualize what others find it difficult. What else can I say. Many a times, I have barked about reservations for admissions and how it affects the system, but actually I am just being supercilious and arrogant to have gifted with sensors capable of sensing various blessed signals of life. Almost all those who come from interiors or even from city are intellectually weak or are trained by those who are. Most are by compulsion materialistic. The processors are quite weak. What can a core 2 duo processor do about core 1 processor. We humans are like the processors of a computer, we can feel bad about the lower performed ones, but only the designer can solve the problem.

It may be slow, but as more and more people become aware of the drawbacks of the system of education that encourages rote learning, things will start to change. Market forces will change schools.

Ceiling fan

I read somewhere that as a solution for student suicides, IISc has decided to remove fans from hostel rooms. No fan, no suicide. This shoul...
